In trauma survivors and those who suffer chronic stress, the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for the acute stress response, also known as the fight, flight, or freeze response remains in a state of high alert.  When people experience something traumatic, have PTSD or suffer from constant anxiety, they may no longer feel as though the world is a safe place.  They may feel as though danger is everywhere.

When the body perceives a threat or danger, whether real or imagined, the information is sent through our senses to the amygdala, which interprets the images and sounds, and when a threat or danger is perceived it sends a distress signal to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus communicates with the rest of the body through the autonomic nervous system.  Once the amygdala sends the distress signal to the hypothalamus, the hypothalamus sends signals through the autonomic nerves to the adrenals. The adrenal glands respond by pumping the hormone adrenalin into the bloodstream.

As the adrenalin circulates, your body goes through a number of changes; your heart rate increases, pushing blood to your heart, muscles and other vital organs, you begin to breathe rapidly, taking in extra oxygen which is sent to the brain which increases alertness. All of these responses are designed to keep us alive, and occur quickly and without thought.  When the perceived threat is gone, systems are designed to return to normal function; which takes between 20 to 60 minutes.

When we are in a constant state of fear or panic, the stress hormones build up in our system causing a multitude of physiological and emotional symptoms.  Frequent or chronic activation of the amygdala, can lead to digestive problems, increased risk of heart disease, tension or migraine headaches, and fibromyalgia.  It is exhausting to spend so much time in a state of high alert.
